Day 1 Frankfurt
It only takes 11 minutes from the Airport local train station located below baggage claim in arrival Hall 1 of Frankfurt International Airport (FRA) to Frankfurt Central Station. The fare is covered by the “Frankfurt Card” which is already included in the price of the Romantic Road Coach tour package. Your hotel is located within a short walking distance of Frankfurt Central Station. Although Frankfurt is not part of the Romantic Road, it still is a perfect location to start this Romantic Road Coach tour. Frankfurt is a very modern metropolis that offers many historic sites. They include: the Romerberg (hill of the Romans) with its beautifully restored timber-framed houses; the Goethe Haus where the world famous poet once lived; the Paulskirche, symbol for democracy and freedom in Germany; and “Alt-Sachsenhausen“, where at Schellgasse number 6 you will find Frankfurt’s oldest timber-framed house, built around 1291.
The Frankfurt museum riverbank is one of the most important locations for museums in Germany and Europe. The exhibition buildings are lined up on both sides of the Main riverbank, several famous museums are to be found in the city centre. Visit the “Stadel“, the German Museum of Architecture as well as the Museum of Applied Art or the “Schirn Kunsthalle” to name only a very few. Don’t miss out on Frankfurt’s “Zeil“, a huge pedestrian zone where shopping is the name of the game. So, if you arrive early enough in Frankfurt, visiting this interesting metropolis is certainly worthwhile.
Day 2 Nuremberg
The Express Bus or Rail will take you from Frankfurt Central Station to Nuremberg Central Station. Your hotel is located in walking distance from Nuremberg Central Station (which is located just outside the Old City Wall surrounding Nuremberg Old Town and the Imperial Castle). Nuremberg’s history reaches back to the year 1050, its name “nourenberc” translates into “rocky hill”. Nuremberg’s famous landmark, the “Kaiserburg” (Imperial Castle), towers above the Old town, which is protected by the five kilometers long city wall, many towers and gates can still be visited. The medieval Castle is one of the most important imperial palaces dating from the middle ages from the 11th century (admission included). In the Third Reich Adolf Hitlers´Nazi Party had chosen Nuremberg for their Nazi Rallies and if you are interested in that part of history you may want to visit the Documenation Center Nazi Rally Grounds which are located just south of the Old Town.
When exploring the beauty of Nuremberg’s medieval Old Town you may want to start right at the Koenigstor (“Kingsgate”) which is the gate right across from Nuremberg Central Station. From where the timber framed buildings, the Gothic Church of St.Lawrence and the Church of St.Sebaldus can be easily reached by foot. Right next to the Koenigstor is the Handwerkerhof (craft center), here you will feel like you are back in the medieval times, there are craft workshops like they used to have a long time ago as well as a gingerbread bakery. Make sure to enjoy a Nuremberg Bratwurst along with a beer or a glass of “Frankenwein” (franconian wine).
Day 3 Day trip to Rothenburg ob der Tauber
It only takes about a little more than an hour by rail from Nuremberg Central station to get to Rothenburg ob der Tauber. The charming medieval town, towering above the “Tauber” river, is located at the cross-way of the Romantic Road (running from Wurzburg to Fussen/Alp Mountains) and the Castle Road (running from Mannheim/Heidelberg to Prague). Enjoy visiting the Old Town with the historic City wall (can be walked on). A highlight for many is “Kaethe Wohlfahrt Christmas Wonderland which is open all year. Adjected to the store is the Christmas Museum which is worth visiting if you are interested in the history of Christmas and Christmas decorations. The price of your tour includes an English-speaking escorted walking tour which will take place at 2pm. At your convenience take the train from medieval Rothenburg ob der Tauber back to Nuremberg Central Station, where your hotel is located.
Day 4 Prague
After breakfast you will take the Express Bus to Prague. Travel time is about 3.40 hours. Your hotel is located in walking distance from Prague Central Station. The Old Town of Prague can easily be explored by foot from your centrally located hotel. You have all afternoon and evening to see many of the highlights. Maybe you want to take a short walk into the Old Town (“Staré město”) since in Prague’s historic Center numerous historic buildings and monuments can be seen. At “Staroměstské náměstí, the Old Town Square, you will find the famed Astronomical Clock (Orloj), built into one side of the Old Town Hall Tower, the gothic Church of Our Lady before Týn as well as the mural-covered Storch building.
If you walk a little further towards Prague´s Vltava River you will find another highlight – the Karlův most (Charles Bridge). Construction of Prague’s most famous medieval bridge started in 1357 under King Charles IV. The bridge connects the Lesser Town with the Old Town. From the Charles Bridge you have a great view of the Hradčany (Castle District) with Prague Castle towering above the city of Prague. Back in 870 constructions of the first buildings began, many buildings were added during the centuries.
Day 5 Prague
You may want to start this day by joining a free English-speaking 3 hours walking tour of the “Golden City” (information on how to reserve this tour will be provided). In afternoon to take a closer look into those sights which are most interesting to you. Maybe you would like to cross the Charles Bridge again and take a closer look into Prague Castle? You will pass the Lesser Quarter (Malá Strana, “little quarter”) which is one of the most historic parts of town. Of course you have to try some culinary delights of Prague as well as a Pilsner Beer!
Day 6 Prague / Optional: Kutná Hora
On Day 6 of your vacation package you have either more time for sightseeing in Prague or you can think about a taking a guided tour to the macabre sight of Kutná Hora’s bone chapel. The price of this tour is not included in the price of your holiday package but – if you let us know in advance – we can book this 6 six hour tour for you for an extra of EUR 26 per person. Kutná Hora is one of the most popular destinations in the Czech Republic. The tour will take you by the famous “Alois Dallmayr” luxury delicatessen and coffee store as well as to theHofbrauhaus of course, probably the world’s most popular beer hall. This may be a great place to enjoy a hearty dinner and a fresh Mass of beer (one mug holds 33.8 US fl oz)!
Day 8 Munich
Today you have another day for sightseeing in Munich! Or, if you rather want to see something else, we can arrange self-guided day tours for this day for you. A very nice option (EUR 21 per person) is to do a day trip into the Bavarian Alps. To get into the mountain resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, where the Winter Olympics took place in 1936, you just take a direct 1.5 hours train ride from Munich. The train goes south and passes Lake Starnberg (you want to take a seat on the left hand side of the train). Garmisch-Partenkirchen itself is worth a visit and also the “Partnachklamm” (Partnach Gorge), a deep gorge that has been incised by the Partnach River. You can also take the “Zugspitzbahn” onward from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Lake Eibsee. The lake lies right below the Zugspitze Mountain and there is a path around the lake you can hike on which is very scenic. If you decide to take a ride on top of the Zugspitze you can either book this in advance with us (for a discounted price of EUR 42) or buy a ticket right there (for the regular price of EUR 52). Especially on a beautiful sunny day the cable car ride up to the Zugspitze Mountain – Top of Germany – is a “must do”.
Instead of visiting the Zugspitze und can also hike the neighboring mountains Kreutzeck (5,417 ft.) and Osterfeldkopf . You can either book this in advance with us (for a discounted price of EUR 21) or buy a ticket right there (for the regular price of EUR 26). Here you can walk on the AlpspiX (which is free of charge): two steel beams form a floating X over a vertical drop of more than 3,000 ft.. You have great views of the “Höllental” below and also of the (mostly) snow covered Zugspitze which is just across from the Osterfeldkopf. For details about this day trip please also see Thomas’s Blog Alp Mountains (Zugspitz area) – Daytrip by Rail from Munich.
Another option is to arrange a self-guided tour to the KZ Dachau Memorial Site which is located just outside of Munich (EUR 12 per person for rail, admission to the Memorial Site is free). For details about this 4- 6 hours half day trip please also see Thomas’s Blog Dachau Memorial Site – Day trip by Rail from Munich.
Day 9 ESCORTED COACH TOUR TO THE ROYAL CASTLES
Another highlight of your tour will be a visit of the world famous Neuschwanstein Castle. You will be on an all-day escorted coach tour which will first take you to Oberammergau for a photo stop (you may want take a look at the Festival Hall where the Passion Play takes place every ten years.) The coach will then take you to Linderhof Palace, the Royal Villa of King Ludwig II. The Palace and Park were inspired by Versailles and the rooms are beautifully decorated and furnished. After a short drive through Austria and back into Germany you will get to Neuschwanstein Castle. The picture of Neuschwanstein is probably present in everybody’s mind and Neuschwanstein really seems to be taken out of a fairy tale. You will join an English-speaking guided tour through the Castle. The tour of the interior, the Throne Hall, the Hall of the Singers, the Grotto and all of the private rooms which were built for King Ludwig II, will make the picture perfect! After the tour of the inside make sure to take some time to explore the castle grounds. The view of Neuschwanstein from the bridge behind the castle is like no other! Your luxury coach will take you back to Munich where you will arrive in time for dinner.
Day 10 Munich Int. Airport
