Day 1 Frankfurt
It only takes 11 minutes from the Airport local train station located below baggage claim in arrival Hall 1 of Frankfurt International Airport (FRA) to Frankfurt Central Station. Your hotel is located in short walking distance of Frankfurt Central Station. Frankfurt is a very modern metropolis which nevertheless offers many historic sites such as the Romerberg (hill of the Romans) with its beautifully restored timber-framed houses, of course the Goethe Haus where the world famous poet once lived, the Paulskirche, symbol for democracy and freedom in Germany, “Alt-Sachsenhausen“, where in Schellgasse number 6 you will find Frankfurt’s oldest timber-framed house which was built around 1291, to name only a few of Frankfurt’s historic landmarks.
The Frankfurt Museum Riverbank is one of the most important locations for museums in Germany and Europe. The exhibition buildings are lined up on both sides of the Main riverbank, several famous museums are to be found in the city centre. Visit the “Stadel“, the German Museum of Architecture as well as the Museum of Applied Art or the “Schirn Kunsthalle” to name only a very few. Don’t miss out on Frankfurt’s “Zeil“, a huge pedestrian zone where shopping is the name of the game. So, if you arrive early enough in Frankfurt, visiting this interesting metropolis is certainly worthwhile.
Day 2 Erfurt
By High-Speed train you will get to Erfurt. See where Martin Luther studied, bow heads where he prayed and walk the same medieval streets. At almost every turn, there’s a reminder of the man who launched the Reformation. Erfurt was the young Luther’s spiritual home. In 1505 he graduated from the University with a Masters in philosophy. It is said that a violent storm close to Erfurt that same year prompted him to become a monk at the Augustinerkloster (Augustinian Monastery) in gratitude for his survival. Martin Luther stayed there until 1511 and was ordained as a priest in St. Mary’s Cathedral. Even after he had left the city, he often returned to preach to enthusiastic crowds, in the university church (St. Michael’s) for example. It has been more than 500 years since Luther was a student at the collegium maius, the old Erfurt University’s main building, which is now being restored.
The Augustinian Monastery, dating back to 1277, houses an exhibition that shows the life and work of its most renowned resident. You can visit Luther’s cell in addition to its impressive library with many rare books. Another important structure in Erfurt is the Barfusserkirche, or the black-friars’ “Church of the Barefooted.” Most of the church was destroyed in 1944, but even in the present condition the church is one of the greatest examples of German ecclesiastical architecture of the 14th and 15th centuries. Luther also preached here in 1529 before the Franciscan monastery was discontinued. Other significant sites for those interested in the Reformation and its leader are the Luther monument (next to the Merchants’ Church on the Anger road) and the “Haus Zum Schwarzen Horn” at Michaelisstrasse 48. This building housed Mathes Maler’s printing workshop, where many of Luther’s pamphlets were printed. Do not miss to try a Thuringer Rostbratwurst, a Thuringian sausage. You will find several grills in the Old Town where these delicious sausages are being served!
Day 3 Leipzig
Take the direct High-Speed train from Erfurt to Leipzig. Leipzig is located in eastern Germany, in the Free State of Saxony. The train ride from Erfurt to Leipzig only takes about 45 minutes. The city is greatly influenced by its centuries-old tradition as a trade-fair city.
In the eighteenth century Leipzig developed into a major music metropolis. Great musicians such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Robert Schumann, and Richard Wagner all lived and worked in the city. The Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the St. Thomas Boys Choir, the Opera House Ballet, and a host of other ensembles form cornerstones of a lively music scene. One of the most frequented sights in Leipzig, along with Bach’s tomb in St. Thomas Church, is St. Nicholas Church. St. Nicholas is the oldest church in Leipzig’s city center and dates back to the year 1165. Its classicist interior is glamorous and was created in the late 18th century. It was in the walls of this church that a nonviolent protest movement took shape in 1989, culminating in the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of Germany.
Visit the Old City Hall which was built in 1556. It is today held to be one of the finest example of municipal Renaissance architecture in Germany. Also a “must see” is the Maedler Passage. It was built in 1912 according to the model of the Milanese Galeria Victor Emmanuel. It is the most famous of the many city arcades and passageways that originated from the former trading courtyards of the city. Many shops, elegant boutiques, bars and cafés can be found here, as well as the entrance to the famous Auerbachs Keller restaurant.
Day 4 Berlin
By High-speed rail you will get from Leipzig to Berlin in a little more than an hour. Germany´s capital city is a great and dynamic metropolis. The unification of East and West Berlin 25 years ago changed the city in many ways. Berlin fascinates visitors it’s culture and history are unique. Your tour includes the 48 hour Berlin and Potsdam Welcome Card. With this card you will have discounts to 200 museums, city tours and attractions and it includes a pass for unlimited free use of the Berlin public transportation system. With your tour package you will receive Berlin Walking tour suggestions as well as information about the public buses “M100” and “M200”: the buses are public double decker buses which cover many sights of Berlin and are a perfect way to explore the city by hopping on and off those buses. They run very frequently all day from 5am until midnight and if you take both routes you will have a circle taking you from the former Center of East Berlin (“Berlin Alexanderplatz”) to the Center of West Berlin (“Bahnhof Zoo”, “Ku´damm” shopping area). Bus M200 takes you south of the “Tiergarten” to West Berlin´s Bahnhof Zoo where you may want to visit the “Gedachtniskirche” (Memorial Church) as well as the KaDeWe, continental Europe´s largest compartment store, which is located close to the Ku´damm. Bus M100 takes you back through the Tiergarten and partly north of it, passing the “Siegessaule” (Victory Column), Bellevue Palace (built in 1786 for the younger brother of Friedrich II, Ferdinand of Prussia, today: seat of the Germany´s President), the Reichstag (German Parliament), the Brandenburg Gate and the Museum Island back to Berlin Alexanderplatz.

Day 5 Berlin
You may want to start this day by joining a free English-speaking 2.5 hours walking tour of Berlin (information on how to reserve this tour will be provided). There are plenty of opportunities to take advantage of your Berlin and Potsdam Welcome Card today. However, you are holding the extended version of the Card which also covers public transportation in the greater Berlin area, to Potsdam and to Oranienburg for example. If you are interested in the infamous history during WWII you may want to visit the Memorial and Museum Sachsenhausen, located just outside of Berlin. The Concentration Camp (“KZ”) in Oranienburg-Sachsenhausen was built as the role-model for many “KZ” in Germany and Central Europe. You will need about half a day for the trip to the Memorial Site (see Day 7 of our History Rail Tour “Fascination and Terror –Rise and Fall of the Third Reich” for more detailed information). Admission to Sachsenhausen is free and public transportation by rail/bus is covered by your Berlin and Potsdam Welcome Card.
Also worth a visit is the city of Potsdam, Capital of the State of Brandenburg. The city was built by the Prussian Kings within a lake area and with its many cultural landmarks, in particular the Palaces of Sanssouci located in midst beautiful parks, the city is definitely worth a visit. Rail to Potsdam as well as public transportation by tram and buses within the city of Potsdam are covered by your Berlin and Potsdam Welcome Card.
When you are back in Berlin: a nice way to see Berlin is by foot. Your tour package includes a suggestion for a free English-speaking walking tour of Berlin as well as walking suggestions for the area around the Brandenburg Gate, in case you would like to discover the city on your own. From the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag (German Parliament) the walking tour passes by the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, to Berlin´s new city center, the “Potsdamer Platz”, to “Checkpoint Charlie”, to East Berlin´s Culture- and Shopping Street “Friedrichstrasse” (site of the “golden twenties”), to the “Gendarmenmarkt”, where the German and French Cathedrals are located, via the promenade street “Unter den Linden” to the Museum Island.
The remains of the wall can be visited at Berlin´s East Side Gallery where parts of the wall have been turned into a piece of art. If you are interested in Third Reich history a “must visit” is the documentation center “Topography of Terror“. It is located at the site from where the Nazis planned and managed most of their crimes.
Day 6 Dresden
After breakfast the “EuroCity” train will take you from Berlin directly to Dresden. Your hotel is in walking distance from the rail station. You will enjoy a Hop-on Hop-off City tour of Dresden – the bus will take you to the major sights of the city and the ticket is valid all day.
Dresden, the river Elbe and the gently rolling landscape between Saxon Switzerland and Meissen determine the nature in which the city is embedded. The Dresden Elbe valley extends some 18 kilometers along the Elbe river from Ubigau Palace and Ostragehege fields to the Pillnitz Palace and the Elbe River island. The Dresden Elbe valley features a combination of landscape and culture which is crowned by the Pillnitz Palace and the centre of Dresden with its many monuments and parks. Dresden is a modern city with lots of history inside, and as the inhabitants are known for their special charm, every visitor will feel welcome immediately. There are many interesting places to see, such as the Frauenkirche (Church Of Our Lady), the Dresden Zwinger, the Semper Opera House and the Royal Palace, to name just a few. There are magnificent promenades along the river Elbe which wait to be discovered as well as many museums and cultural highlights awaiting the interested visitor.
Day 7 Prague
After breakfast the “EuroCity” train will take you from Dresden to Prague. Travel time is a little more than two hours. Your hotel in Prague is in walking distance of Prague Central Station. The Old Town of Prague can easily be explored by foot from your hotel. You have all afternoon and evening to see many of the highlights: Karluv Most (Charles Bridge), probably the most beautiful medieval bridge to be found today, the Old Town Square, dominated by the Church of Our Lady of Tyn as well as the Town Hall with its Town Hall Clock (Orloj) which was first installed in 1410. Watch the procession of the twelve Apostles, an hourly event which one should not miss, the Powder Tower (Prasna brana) … and many more!

Day 8 Prague
You may want to start this day by joining a free English-speaking 3 hours walking tour of the “Golden City” (information on how to reserve this tour will be provided). In afternoon to take a closer look into those sights which are most interesting to you. Maybe you would like to cross the Charles Bridge again and take a closer look into Prague Castle? You will pass the Lesser Quarter (Malá Strana, “little quarter”) which is one of the most historic parts of town. Of course you have to try some culinary delights of Prague as well as a Pilsner Beer!
Day 9 Vienna
In about 4 hours and 10 minutes the Speed Rail “EuroCity” (EC) will take you from Prague to Vienna located in the east of Austria, close to the borders to Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary. The price of your vacation package already includes the 48 hour Vienna Card. With this card you enjoy more than 200 discounts in Vienna, at museums and sights, theaters and concerts, in shops, cafes, restaurants and also the “Heurige” wine taverns. But most importantly with this card you also enjoy unlimited free public transportation within Vienna. Even though your hotel is located in the City Center it is great to have the option to take the subway, a street-car or a public bus. On your first day in Vienna you may want to visit the Imperial Palace, for example, the “Hofburg Vienna”, the center of the former Habsburg Empire. The Palace was Sisi´s Imperial home and household, and the Imperial Apartments, the Sisi Museum and the Silver Collection can be visited here. At the Vienna Hofburg you also find the Spanish Riding School where you may want to watch a performance or join a practice session and also the Old Town Hall which is close by. In immediate walking distance of the Hofburg you will find the State Opera House, definitely one of the world’s most famous Opera Houses where the Vienna Opera Ball takes place every year. St. Stephen’s Cathedral is the seat of the Archbishop of Vienna and it is a “must see” as well as smaller churches like the “Universitatskirche” (Jesuits Church) and the “Peterskirche” (St. Peter’s Church).

Day 10 Vienna
Enjoy a full day of sightseeing in Vienna with your 48 hour Vienna Card. Maybe you want to visit the “Ringstrasse”, a circular road around the inner city districts of Vienna. In the 19th century the road was replacing the Old City Wall which had been built in the 13th century. Many of the buildings you find along this road, the Austrian Parliament Building or the University of Vienna the for example, were built around the 1850´s. You may want to visit Schonbrunn Palace and its beautiful Garden. Your Vienna Card covers the fare to get there; the subway station “Schonbrunn” (subway line U4) is very close to the entrance of Schonbrunn Palace, once the summer residence of the Habsburg family and home of Maria Theresa. The Rococo palace is one of the most important architectural, cultural and historical monuments in Austria and nowadays is one of the most visited sights in Vienna. It all started with the building of a mansion on hunting grounds in 1548 just outside of Vienna. The impressive Palace in its present form (it has 1,441 rooms!) was built and remodeled around the 1750s by Maria Theresa. Make sure to plan in some time for a visit of Schonbrunn Garden. There you also find the Neptune Fountain and Gloriette, which was designed to symbolize the glory of the Habsburg power.

Day 11 Salzburg
In about 2 hours and 40 minutes the high-speed “Rail Jet” (RJ) will take you throughout Austria, from Vienna located in the east of Austria, close to the borders to Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary, to Salzburg, all the way in the west of Austria, right at the German border. Salzburg, beautiful town close to the Alp Mountains, birthplace of Mozart is also the site of the popular movie “The Sound of Music”. Your hotel is located in walking distance of Salzburg Central Station.
Salzburg is a city which can be explored by foot and your tour package contains a suggestion for walking tour. Along this tour you will be able to see Mirabell Palace and Park, Franciscan Church and Mozart’s Residence. A highlight of course is Hohensalzburg Fortress, built in 1077. It is the largest, fully-preserved fortress in central Europe. The medieval princes’ apartments and the Fortress Museum are of particular interest. Since 1892 the fortress can easily be reached by funicular railway departing from the Festungsgasse.
Day 12 Munich
In about 1 hours and 20 minutes the high-speed “Rail Jet” (RJ) will take you from Salzburg to Munich. The price of your tour already includes a ticket for free use of public transportation system (buses, trams, subways) within Munich.
Along with your tour package you will also receive walking suggestions for a self-guided walking tour through Munich City Center. Along this walking tour you will visit the Marienplatz with the New Town Hall (with the “Glockenspiel”), the Konigsplatz (King´s Square), cultural center in the 19th century and later, during the “Third Reich”, site of Nazi Party mass rallies and location of the Nazi Party headquarters in Germany, the English Garden as well as the State Opera House.
You will be able to visit famous churches like Munich Frauenkirche, “Dom zu Unserer Lieben Frau” (Cathedral of Our Dear Lady), with a height of 325 ft. a Munich landmark, St. Peters Church, built in the 14th century and the Asam Church, which was built as a private chapel and integrated into an apartment building. The tour will pass by the most famous Munich shopping streets (Kaufinger street and Neuhauser street) as well as by the “Viktualienmarkt”, a traditional farmers market (open every day except on Sundays). The tour will take you by the famous “Alois Dallmayr” luxury delicatessen and coffee store as well as to the Hofbrauhaus of course, probably the world’s most popular beer hall. This may be a great place to enjoy a hearty dinner and a fresh Mass of beer (one mug holds 33.8 US fl oz)!
Day 13 Munich
After breakfast you may want to join a free 3 hour English-speaking walking tour of Munich. The tour starts at the Marienplatz (Mary’s square) and will take you through the medieval heart of Munich.
After the tour you have additional time to take a close look at the sights in Munich you are most interested in. If you are interested in the infamous part of German history you may want to visit KZ Dachau which was the first Concentration Camp of Nazi Germany, soon erected after Hitler came into power in 1933. Dachau is located just outside of Munich and if you are interested to visit the memorial site please let us know so we can add a day pass to get there. The admission to the Memorial Site itself is free. Including the travel time from/to Munich Central Station you need about 4-5 hours for a visit. Day 14 Heidelberg
It takes about three hours by speed rail from Munich to Heidelberg Central Station. Since the station is a little bit outside of the Old Town, where your hotel is located, your tour already includes a taxi transfer from Heidelberg Central Station to your hotel. Heidelberg is a beautiful historic town located along the banks of the Neckar River and the most significant sight is certainly the ruin of Heidelberg Castle, which is towering above the city. Since your hotel is located right inside of the Old Town of Heidelberg it is easy to explore historic Heidelberg by foot. Your tour package will include walking tour suggestions for the Old Town. Along the walking tour you will see the Old Bridge from where you have a nice view of the Old Town and the Castle ruins above. You will also pass by the “Marktplatz” (market place) which is the main square of Heidelberg, the “Peterskirche” (St. Peter´s Church) and the historic University of Heidelberg. Heidelberg´s University was founded 1386 and it is the oldest University in Germany and with more than 30.000 students it is still one of the most important universities in Germany today. If you want to enjoy a view over Heidelberg and the Neckar River you may want to walk up to the grounds of the castle ruins or – for a small fee, take the historic funicular up and down Heidelberg Castle.

Day 15 Frankfurt Int. Airport
Today your Germany, Austria & Prague Vacation Package ends. Depending on the departure time of your flight from Frankfurt International Airport we will arrange a transfer from your hotel to the airport. The airport shuttle bus will pick you up right at your hotel. Travel time from your hotel in Heidelberg to Frankfurt International Airport is about an hour.

Thanks for all your time and effort used to put together a splendid tour for us. It was plain sailing as everything was perfectly arranged and planned. We had no problems to travel from city to city by train and to reach the hotel from the station. The hotels were all within walking distance of the train stations and if not, a taxi's was arranged. Also our return from Strasbourg to Frankfurt Airport was well planned and we reached the airport on time.
We loved the four star hotels that you chose for us.
We can recommend To-Europe for your next visit to Europe. You have customised our tour perfectly. You were always immediately available to answer and assist with any questions and uncertainties we had.

Christian - We would like to take a moment to thank you for all the work you did to make this such a special experience for us. You were willing to change the tour to accommodate a visit with our nephew in Kaiserslautern which was such a great beginning! Throughout the tour we were amazed that everything was so well planned. We had no problems getting from city to city by train and getting around the cities once we arrived. We were also very happy with the accommodations in each city. The hotels were well within walking distance of the train stations so we were able to drop off our packs before beginning the adventure that day. This was our first visit to Europe and we would not hesitate to use your services if and when we decide to return. Thank you so much!
What an excellent adventure we had! This was our second trip booked with To- Europe. Like the first trip, all of the details that could have been difficult for us were perfectly taken care of in advance. To-Europe was very easy to work with. We loved seeing the big cities like Berlin and Prague but also enjoyed smaller cities (Erfurt, Leipzig) that we wouldn’t have visited on our own. And we had a great deal of independence not being tied to a tour group. The hotels were all very nice— some better than others but all well located, clean, good beds. Woldemar from To- Europe gave us some restaurant recommendations that were highlights of the trip. I could go on, but I hope it is obvious how much we enjoyed our travels. We are already starting to dream about a return trip! Thank you Thomas, and everyone at To-Europe.
