8-Day City Duo Frankfurt, Berlin & Surroundings (8R11)
Day 1 – Frankfurt Int. Airport/ Frankfurt
Your City Duo tour Frankfurt, Berlin & surroundings starts right from Frankfurt International Airport. From the airport terminal you will take the commuter rail directly to Frankfurt Central Station, located in Frankfurt City Center. It only takes 12 minutes from the Airport local train station located below baggage claim in arrival Hall 1 of Frankfurt International Airport (FRA) to Frankfurt Central Station. The fare is covered by the “Frankfurt Card” which is already included in the price of the vacation package. Your hotel is located in short walking distance of Frankfurt Central Station. Frankfurt is a very modern metropolis which nevertheless offers many historic sites such as the Romerberg (hill of the Romans) with its beautifully restored timber-framed houses, of course the Goethe Haus where the world famous poet once lived, the Paulskirche, symbol for democracy and freedom in Germany, “Alt-Sachsenhausen“, where in Schellgasse number 6 you will find Frankfurt’s oldest timber-framed house which was built around 1291, to name only a few of Frankfurt’s historic landmarks.

Day 2 – Frankfurt
Today you have a full day for sightseeing in Frankfurt. You can get around Frankfurt by using the public transportation system within Frankfurt (busses, trams, subways, suburban trains) all day. The fare is covered by the “Frankfurt Card” which is already included in the price of your tour package.
The Frankfurt Museum Riverbank is one of the most important locations for museums in Germany and Europe. The exhibition buildings are lined up on both sides of the Main riverbank, several famous museums are to be found in the city centre. Visit the “Stadel“, the German Museum of Architecture as well as the Museum of Applied Art or the “Schirn Kunsthalle” to name only a very few. Don’t miss out on Frankfurt’s “Zeil“, a huge pedestrian zone where shopping is the name of the game.

Day 3 – Day trip by rail: Limburg an der Lahn & Weilburg
Today you go on a circle tour (by rail) which takes you to two beautiful smaller cities just north of Frankfurt, Limburg an der Lahn and Weilburg. Both towns are idyllically located at the Lahn River. You start by visiting Limburg. A direct train takes you right from Frankfurt Central Station to the town which was important in medieval times because of its location at the trade route from Frankfurt to Cologne. Travel time to Limburg is about 70 minutes.
Limburg has a charming little Old Town with many timber-framed houses, some dating back to the 12th century. The “House of the Seven Deadly Sins” for example or the “Werner-Senger-Haus” (located just across), which dates back to 1250. The widely visible landmark of the town, the Cathedral (“Limburger Dom”, also known as “Georgsdom”), is located next to Limburg Castle. It is a beautiful example of the Late Romanesque architecture. And since the Cathedral was built on the highest place in town you have a beautiful view from the Cathedral grounds over the Lahn River Valley and the Old Town. The picture of the Cathedral was taken from the Old Bridge over the Lahn River where you also find the Statue of St. John of Nepomuk.
A direct train will take you from Limburg an der Lahn to Weilburg. Travel time is about 30 minutes. The rail journey itself is very scenic since the railroad tracks run along the Lahn River through the Lahn River Valley. The river is very popular in Germany for kayaking.
Weilburg used to be the governmental seat of the House of Nassau-Weilburg. It has a historic Old Town with timber framed houses. The landmark though is Weilburg Palace (“Schloss Weilburg”) which was first erected as a Castle in the 14th century. It was converted in the 16th and 18th centuries into a Palace and it is considered among the best-preserved Renaissance Palaces. Adjected to the Palace is the Lutheran “Schlosskirche” (Palace Church) from the early 18th century. Also the Garden located on the Palace Grounds is worth visiting. From here you have a beautiful view into the Lahn River Valley.
At your convinience take the train from Weilburg back to Frankfurt. Travel time is about 90 minutes.

Day 4 – Day trip by rail: Rudesheim am Rhein & Romantic Tour
Today a train takes you from Frankfurt Central Station to Rudesheim am Rhein, gate to the Mittelrheintal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The stunning valley measures around 65 kilometres in length, here the majestic Rhine Rivers breaches the Rheinische Schiefergebirge (schistose mountain). Along the Mittelrheintal are so many historic monuments and cultural landmarks as just about no where else in Europe. The vineyards are towering high above the rapidly floating Rhine River – beautiful landscapes to see!
Especially during your Romantic Tour (ticket included) which starts right in the Old Town of Rudesheim am Rhein: by cable car you will be “sailing” above vineyards (where the white wine “Riesling” is grown) when you take a ride up to the “Niederwald”-Monument – the “Germania“. The monument symbolizes the foundation of the German Empire. From the Germania Monument you will walk on an easy walk to the “Hotel Jagdschloss Niederwald“, built in the 18th century as a hunting lodge. Here you may have a cup of coffee or have lunch. By chair lift you will then take a ride down to Assmannshausen, “sailing” above vineyard where red wine is grown. A short Rhine River Cruise will first take you to the historic Rheinstein Castle. The way uphill to the Castle is for people who like to take a hike – the walk to the Castle may be challenging for people who have problems walking up- or downhill. In this case you may consider to just stay on the Cruise ship which will take you back to Rudesheim am Rhein). For those of you taking the hike: take some time to visit the Castle (admission included) – the roots of the castle date back to the late 13th century and the setting within the vineyards above the Rhine River is absolutely stunning. You have a great view from the Castle. A riverboat will then take you back to Rudesheim am Rhein.
Rudesheim is not only famous for its “Drosselgasse” (a lively alley with restaurants and taverns stretching from the river into Rudesheim Old Town). Rudesheim am Rhein is also famous for its scenic location in midst steep vineyards along the Rhine River and for the Riesling which is grown here. The Riesling is a dry white wine which is very popular in Germany. Explore the Old Town of Rudesheim and also maybe take a walk into the vineyards from where you have great views of the Rhine River and the scenic area surrounding it. If your arrival in Frankfurt is before noon you may consider taking a funicular ride up to the “Niederwalddenkmal”, a monument which was constructed to commemorate the foundation of the German Empire. From next to the “Germania” figure you have a great view over Bingen (across from the Rhine river). In the evening make sure to try a glass of Riesling and enjoy dinner in one of the many wine taverns, e.g. at the Wine Restaurant Rudesheimer Schloss where you will find local specialties as well as German “Gemutlichkeit”. After dinner take the train back to Frankfurt where your hotel is located.
Day 5 Berlin
By high-speed “ICE” train you will travel from Frankfurt to Berlin. Travel time is about 4.5 hours and along this rail journey you will travel from Bavaria, located all the way in the south of Germany, to the north east, where Germany´s Capital City is located. The direct train will run along a new high-speed route which was completed in December 2017. This route runs by Nuremberg, Bamberg, Erfurt, Leipzig and Lutherstadt Wittenberg. All of those towns are worth a visit and if you are interested to spend a day or two in one of those beautiful cities please let us know and we will be happy to extend this tour for you.

Your hotel is in walking distance from the station. Drop off your baggage at your hotel and you are ready to go! Germany´s capital city is a great and dynamic metropolis. The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the reunification of East and West Germany in 1990 changed the city in many ways. Berlin fascinates visitors it’s culture and history are unique. Your tour includes the 96 hour Berlin and Potsdam Welcome Card. With this card you will have discounts to 200 museums, city tours and attractions and it includes a pass for unlimited free use of the Berlin public transportation system.
Day 6 Berlin
You may want to start this day by joining a free English-speaking 2.5 hours walking tour of Berlin (information on how to reserve this tour will be provided) There are plenty of opportunities to take advantage of your Berlin and Potsdam Welcome Card today. With your tour package you will receive Berlin Walking tour suggestions as well as information about the public buses “M100” and “M200”: the buses are public double decker buses which cover many sights of Berlin and are a perfect way to explore the city by hopping on and off those buses. They run very frequently all day from 5am until midnight and if you take both routes you will have a circle taking you from the Center of former East Berlin (“Berlin Alexanderplatz”) to the Center of former West Berlin (“Bahnhof Zoo”, “Ku´damm” shopping area). Bus M200 takes you south of the “Tiergarten” to West Berlin´s Bahnhof Zoo where you may want to visit the “Gedachtniskirche” (Memorial Church) as well as the KaDeWe, continental Europe´s largest compartment store, which is located close to the Ku´damm. Bus M100 takes you back through the Tiergarten and partly north of it, passing the “Siegessaule” (Victory Column), Bellevue Palace (built in 1786 for the younger brother of Friedrich II, Ferdinand of Prussia, today: seat of the Germany´s President), the Reichstag (German Parliament), the Brandenburg Gate and the Museum Island back to Berlin Alexanderplatz.
Day 7 Potsdam or Memorial Sachsenhausen/ Berlin
Today you have a another choice of what you prefer to do: Option 1 is a rail tour into Potsdam (which is located about 25 minutes west of Berlin. Option 2 is a rail tour into Oranienburg (which is located about 30 minutes north of Berlin) for a visit of the Memorial and Museum Sachsenhausen (please see the information below). Option 3 is to stay in Berlin for another day of sightseeing there.
If you are interested in beautiful Palaces and Gardens you may want to choose Option 1 for a visit of Potsdam, Capital of the State of Brandenburg. The city was built by the Prussian Kings within a lake area and with its many cultural landmarks, in particular the Palaces of Sanssouci located in midst beautiful parks. Rail to Potsdam and back to Berlin (as well as public transportation by tram and buses within the city of Potsdam) are covered by your Berlin and Potsdam Welcome Card.
If you are interested in the infamous history during WWII you may want to choose Option 2 for a visit of the Memorial and Museum Sachsenhausen. The memorial site is located in the city of Oranienburg – just outside of Berlin. The Concentration Camp (“KZ”) in Oranienburg-Sachsenhausen was built as the role-model for many Concentration Camps in Germany and Central Europe. You will need about half a day for the trip to the Memorial Site (see Day 7 of our History Rail Tour “Fascination and Terror –Rise and Fall of the Third Reich” for more detailed information). Admission to Sachsenhausen is free and public transportation by rail/bus is covered by your Berlin and Potsdam Welcome Card.

When you are back in Berlin: a nice way to see Berlin is by foot. Your tour package includes a suggestion for a free English-speaking walking tour of Berlin as well as walking suggestions for the area around the Brandenburg Gate, in case you would like to discover the city on your own. From the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag (German Parliament) the walking tour passes by the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, to Berlin´s new city center, the “Potsdamer Platz”, to “Checkpoint Charlie”, to East Berlin´s Culture- and Shopping Street “Friedrichstrasse” (site of the “golden twenties”), to the “Gendarmenmarkt”, where the German and French Cathedrals are located, via the promenade street “Unter den Linden” to the Museum Island.
The remains of the wall can be visited at Berlin´s East Side Gallery where parts of the wall have been turned into a piece of art. If you are interested in Third Reich history a “must visit” is the documentation center “Topography of Terror“. It is located at the site from where the Nazis planned and managed most of their crimes.
Day 8 Berlin/ Berlin Tegel Int. Airport
Depending on departure time of your flight take the airport bus to Berlin Tegel Airport at your convenience (the fare is covered by your 96 hour Berlin and Potsdam Welcome Card. If you have a late flight out of Berlin you may as well do some more sightseeing on that last day of your tour with us.
Please note that the City Duo tour Frankfurt & Berlin can also be booked vice versa – starting in Berlin and ending in Frankfurt. Of course we can add extra nights to this tour in Frankfurt and Berlin, but also in Erfurt, Weimar and Lutherstadt Wittenberg. It is also possible to customize the tour. If it is best for you to fly in and out of the same city for example (e.g. in and out of Frankfurt International Airport. Please do not hesitate to contact us about those options.

We had a fabulous eight day trip to Berlin and Dresden. To Europe set up day trips to Potsdam and Leipzig that we’re well worth the time. As has been our previous experience, the hotels were very nice and would definitely recommend them for future stays. The tours with each city were excellent and all the rail plans worked perfectly! This is our second trip with To Europe and we highly recommend them.
First of all we must thank your team for the wonderful and great tour that you specifically designed for both of us to suit our needs and requests.
The tour was well planned and everything was so perfectly arranged including the transportation from one place to the other, the hotel accommodation, the guided tours etc
We made the maximum use of the day pass on public transportation, the 96 hour Berlin and Potsdam welcome card.
Our special thanks for organizing an all day English speaking escorted coach tour to see the castles in Oberemmergau and Linderhof palaces. The tour guide was so impressive and was interesting. We really don't have enough words to describe how impressed we were with the beauty and the amazing architectural design of them.
Except for few delays on trains for which you have no control over, the whole program was a great success.
Selecting the hotels closest to the railway station was very convenient for easy commute.
We strongly commend the way you guide us with all your advice made ourselves so easy, even though this was our first visit to Europe.
One of our suggestions is to keep extra 2 to 3 hours in addition to the normal time to get to the airport to avoid missing the flight due to train delays.
Also we would like to let you know that the room of the hotel Bristol in Frankfurt did not have enough bright light in the night to attend to our paper work. But everything else of this hotel was good.
