The tour will take you by the famous “Alois Dallmayr” luxury delicatessen and coffee store as well as to the Hofbrauhaus of course, probably the world’s most popular beer hall. Today you will be on an all-day escorted coach tour which will first take you to Oberammergau for a photo stop (you may want take a look at the Festival Hall where the Passion Play takes place every ten years.) The coach will then take you to Linderhof Palace, the Royal Villa of King Ludwig II. The Palace and Park were inspired by Versailles and the rooms are beautifully decorated and furnished. After a short drive through Austria and back into Germany you will get to Neuschwanstein Castle. The picture of Neuschwanstein is probably present in everybody’s mind and Neuschwanstein really seems to be taken out of a fairy tale. You will join an English-speaking guided tour through the Castle. The tour of the interior, the Throne Hall, the Hall of the Singers, the Grotto and all of the private rooms which were built for King Ludwig II, will make the picture perfect! After the tour of the inside make sure to take some time to explore the castle grounds. The view of Neuschwanstein from the bridge behind the castle is like no other! Your luxury coach will take you back to Munich where you will arrive in time for dinner.
Day 3 Augsburg
After breakfast take the Regional train for a 45 minute train ride from Munich to Augsburg. You are holding a day pass this day which also covers public transportation within Augsburg that day. However, your hotel is located in Augsburg City Centre – in walking distance from the rail station. Augsburg, founded in the year 15 B.C. by the Roman Emperor Augustus, became a “medieval metropolis” due to its ideal location at the crossing of the most important continental merchandise routes. The families of the “Fugger” and the “Welser” elevated Augsburg to one of Europe’s most important commercial towns. Augsburg’s Town Hall is the most important Renaissance structure north of the Alps, together with the Perlach Tower it is the town’s landmark. Visit the “Fuggerei“, also known as “The Town within a Town”, founded in 1516 by Jakob Fugger, it was the first settlement for hardworking but impoverished Catholic citizens. Augsburg Cathedral has records reaching back to the year 823 AD, the oldest section probably being the crypt beneath the west choir. Here one can marvel at Romanesque and Gothic frescoes and four-panel paintings by Holbein the Elder. There are only very few German cities which combine bygone prosperity and contemporary life the way Augsburg does.
Day 4 Rothenburg ob der Tauber
In the morning you have some more time for sightseeing in Augsburg. Around noon the Romantic Road Coach will take you from Augsburg to Nordlingen, a lovely medieval town where you have a 30 minute photo stop. Another 30 minute photo stop along your way to Rothenburg ob der Tauber will be in Dinkelsbuhl. Medieval Rothenburg ob der Tauber is definitely a highlight along your tour. Your charming Hotel is located in the Old Town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber (within the City Wall). Taking a walk thru this charming little town is truly a journey back in time. Rothenburg ob der Tauber was once a powerful free imperial town and its monuments, landmarks and buildings still bear witness to these days. Marvel at the half-timbered buildings and on top of the historic town walls which are withstanding time since hundreds of years. Visit the town’s most famous spot, the Ploenlein square, probably the most photographed place in Rothenburg ob der Tauber.
Also very interesting to see is the Spitalbastei Gate, created by Leonhard Weidmann, the Latin inscription on the gate reading: ” Peace to those who enter, health to those who leave”. The Gothic St. James Church is the town’s most prominent church, here you can take a minute and relax in quietness while you enjoy the beauty of the famous Altar of the Holy Blood and the Twelve Apostles Altar. Rothenburg ob der Tauber also offers museums which are cultural highlights, such as the Christmas Museum (admission included) with an exhibition showing Christmas tradition in Germany, the Doll and Toy Museum where the history of playthings is shown, as well as the Crime Museum, where the visitor gets an insight into the law and especially its execution during the last 700 years. In the evening take an English-speaking tour with the Night-Watchman (included).
Day 5 Frankfurt
In the morning you have additional time for sightseeing in Rothenburg ob der Tauber before, in late afternoon, the Romantic Road Coach takes you along the Romantic Road towards Frankfurt. You may deposit your baggage at the reception of the hotel and pick it up before you board the Romantic Road Coach. Along your journey along the Romantic Road on board of the Romantic Road Coach you will again enjoy two photo stops. The first stop will be in Weikersheim, right in front of Weikersheim Palace and Garden. The second photo stop will be in Wurzburg, right in front of Wurzburg Residence. The Romantic Road Coach will arrive in Frankfurt in the evening, right in front of Frankfurt Central Station where your hotel is located. For dinner you will find a wide variety of restaurants in this part of town.
Day 6 Frankfurt Int. Airport
Depending on the departure time of your flight from Frankfurt International Airport you may have free time for sightseeing in Frankfurt. For this last day of your tour you are holding the Frankfurt Card which allows you to use the public transportation system within Frankfurt (trams, busses, subways and surburban trains) at no extra charge. Your Frankfurt Card is also covers the train ride from Frankfurt Central Station to Frankfurt International Airport and it also includes many discounts to museums for example. Although Frankfurt is not part of the Romantic Road, it still is a suitable location to end this Romantic Road Combination tour.
Frankfurt is a very modern metropolis which nevertheless offers many historic sites such as the Romerberg (hill of the Romans) with its beautifully restored timber-framed houses, of course the Goethe Haus where the world famous poet once lived, the Paulskirche, symbol for democracy and freedom in Germany, “Alt-Sachsenhausen“, where in Schellgasse number 6 you will find Frankfurt’s oldest timber-framed house which was built around 1291, to name only a few of Frankfurt’s historic landmarks. The Frankfurt Museum Riverbank is one of the most important locations for museums in Germany and Europe. The exhibition buildings are lined up on both sides of the Main riverbank, several famous museums are to be found in the city centre. Visit the “Stadel“, the German Museum of Architecture as well as the Museum of Applied Art or the “Schirn Kunsthalle” to name only a very few. Don’t miss out on Frankfurt’s “Zeil“, a huge pedestrian zone where shopping is the name of the game.
So, if you have time before your departure – or if you would like to add an additional night in Frankfurt to this tour package – visiting this interesting metropolis is certainly worthwhile.Would you like to download an overview of the 6 Day Romantic Road Combination Tour (6RC01) as a pdf to print it out or to forward it to a friend?
