Day 1 – London
A private transfer will take you from London Heathrow International Airport (LHR) to your hotel located in London City Center. The Capital of the United Kingdom is certainly one of the world’s leading global cities, a modern financial, entertainment and fashion center. On the other hand London is so full of history, art and culture – a lot of sightseeing can be done. Depending on your arrival time in London you may already have time for sightseeing today. The tour includes a 24-hour Hop-on Hop-off ticket. On board of the famous open-topped London double-decker busses you see all of London: over 90 stops along six different routes. You will see London’s famous highlights – for example, Buckingham Palace, the London residence and workplace of the monarchy of the United Kingdom. Make sure to see the Changing of the Guards while you are there. Westminster Abbey, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (since 1066 every royal coronation has taken place here), the Hyde Park and many more sights are to see along your tour.
Day 2 – London
There is definitely more to see in London during the second day of your Pan-European Rail travels. You have the option to join a free walking tour of London (information about the tour will be provided). And maybe it would be nice to visit of one of London´s most famous symbols – the Tower Bridge. The bridge across the Thames is 265 meter (870ft.) long and has been completed in 1894. In the beginning many people disliked its Victorian Gothic style, but over the time the bridge became one of London´s most visited attractions. You may want to take a walk over the bridge to visit another highlight – the Tower of London, a UNESCO world heritage site. The Tower of London was built in the beginning of the 11th century. In turbulent times several kings lived there because London Tower was much safer than the Palace of Westminster. Today the Tower of London is best known for its famous collection of Crown Jewels. Also don´t miss out on St Paul’s Cathedral, Trafalgar Square & Piccadilly during your tour of London. Your tour package includes a short River Cruise on London´s Thames River: on board of the boat you will have an alternative perspective on the city, passing by some top London riverside attractions.

Day 3 – Brussels
If you are interested in rail travel today will be a highlight of your Europe Rail tour: on board of the High-speed Eurostar train you will travel directly from London St. Pancras International Rail Station to Brussels Midi – crossing the canal between England and continental Europe in a tunnel. Travel by Eurostar is just a little more than two hours. Your hotel is located in walking distance from Brussels Midi Station and from there it is easy to walk to many sights. Apart from its famous chocolates and beers, there are many attractions to see. Many modern buildings reflect the fact that Brussels is the unofficial capital of the European Union. A “Brussels must do” place to visit is the Grand Place, the central square of Brussels. Here you find Brussels Town Hall with the statue of Saint Michael and its tower which is 315 ft. tall, the Museum of the City of Brussels and the Guildhalls on the Grand Palace. Close to the Grand Place is the Manneken Pis, a bronze statue of a child urinating into a pool which is said to represent the “irreverent spirit” of Brussels.
Day 4 – Day trip (by rail) to Bruges
Continue your London, Paris, Belgium & Germany Rail Circle tour by making a day trip to Bruges to the beautiful medieval city of Bruges. Travel time is a little less than an hour. From Bruges Central Station it is only a short walk to the historic center of Bruges. You will see charming streets and many canals. Because of its enduring brick Gothic architecture the complete City Center of Bruges is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Within the medieval Old Town are many places to visit. The Church of Our Lady, which was built from the 13th to the 15th century, is the tallest building of the city (a little over 400 ft.) and the white marble altarpiece of the chapel – a sculpture of the Madonna and Child was created by Michelangelo. Then there is the Grote Markt – a market square filled with shops and restaurants. Here you also find the Belfry of Bruges, a medieval bell tower and the former market halls. For a fee it is possible to climb up the narrow staircase to the top of the tower, 366 steps. Very close to the Grote Markt you find the Burg Square where you also find the Basilica of the Holy Blood which was originally built in the 12th century. There is so much to see in every street and every backstreet and another option to explore Bruges is to join a (free) Bruges walking tour which takes place in the afternoon each day. In the evening you will travel by rail from Bruges back to Brussels where your hotel is located.
Day 5 – Cologne
From Brussels/Belgium you travel by high-speed ICE or Thalys to Cologne, one of the oldest cities in Germany. Travel time to Cologne is about two hours. The Romans founded a village located on the River Rhine and called it “Colonia”. Just outside Cologne Central Station, where your hotel is located (in walking distance), you find Cologne´s most famous landmark, the Kolner Dom (Cologne Cathedral) which is the largest gothic church in northern Europe. Each of both towers has a height of more than 500 ft., the Cologne Cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the landmark still is the seat of the Archbishop of Cologne. In the Cathedral you find the High Altar made out of black marble (which was installed in 1322) as well as the Shrine of the Three Kings (created in the 12th century). Admission to the Cathedral is free. For a fee it is possible to climb up the tower and to visit the treasury.
If you are interested in perfume a visit of the Fragrance Museum in Cologne, the birthplace of the Eau des Cologne, is a must do. The Fragrance Museum is located less than 10 walking minutes from Cologne Cathedral and a visit allows you to discover three centuries of fragrance history. Another Museum, the NS-Documentation Center of the City of Cologne, may be interesting to visit for those of you interested in the history of the “Third Reich”. It is located in the former headquarters of the Cologne Gestapo (secret police) which is also only about 10 walking minutes from Cologne Main Station (if you are interested in Nazi Germany/WWII-history you may also want to take a look at our History Rail Tour “Fascination and Terror –Rise and Fall of the Third Reich”). The Old Town of Cologne is located just a little south of Cologne Central Station. Shopping is great along the “Hohe Strasse”, a pedestrian zone, and in the streets going east toward the Rhine River you will find many places to eat and enjoy a Koelsch, a local specialty beer.
Day 6 Wurzburg
Take the High-speed (ICE) train from Cologne to Wurzburg. If you like you can have an optional stop in Aschaffenburg to visit the Renaissance Palace (closed on Mondays), built in 1605-1614, served until 1803 as a second official residence for the archbishops and electors of Mainz. It features an art gallery with works by Lucas Cranach the Elder (Branch of the Bavarian State Galleries), the Vestment Chamber of the Palace Church with ecclesiastical vestments from the Mainz Cathedral treasury, the Princes’ Apartments with neoclassical furnishings and the Municipal Palace Museum.

Wurzburg Residence and Rothenburg ob der Tauber © Romantische Straße Touristik Arbeitsgemeinschaft GbR
Take a train from Aschaffenburg on to Wurzburg. The city is idyllically located in the midst of vineyards, with the medieval Fortress Marienberg towering above. Wurzburg is an old bishop’s seat and a lively town, proudly presenting monuments of different eras. Culture, art, history and hospitality are ever-present in this remarkable city! Fortress Marienberg (admission included), Wurzburg´s landmark, has of course changed its appearance a great deal since it was first mentioned, today the oldest part of the fortress is the “Rundkirche” (round church) which was built in the year one thousand. The Cathedral, the Marienkapelle, the “Alte Mainbrucke” (old bridge across the river Main ), the Juliusspital and the “Kappele” are musts, but make sure that you do not miss out on the “Furstbischofliche Residenz“, Prince Bishops Residence (admission included). This “Palace above all Palaces” is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Enjoy this beautiful town which offers not only cultural but also culinary highlights such as the hearty cuisine and, of course, the world famous Frankenwein (Franconia wine!).
Day 7 Rothenburg ob der Tauber
By regional rail you will get from Wurzburg to Rothenburg ob der Tauber. The Bavarian medieval town is definitely a highlight along your tour. Your charming Hotel is located in the Old Town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber (within the City Wall). Taking a walk thru this charming little town is truly a journey back in time. Rothenburg ob der Tauber was once a powerful free imperial town and its monuments, landmarks and buildings still bear witness to these days. Marvel at the half-timbered buildings and on top of the historic town walls which are withstanding time since hundreds of years. Visit the town’s most famous spot, the Ploenlein square, probably the most photographed place in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Also very interesting to see is the Spitalbastei Gate, created by Leonhard Weidmann, the latin inscription on the gate reading: ” Peace to those who enter, health to those who leave”. The Gothic St. James Church is the town’s most prominent church, here you can take a minute and relax in quietness while you enjoy the beauty of the famous Altar of the Holy Blood and the Twelve Apostles Altar. Rothenburg ob der Tauber also offers museums which are cultural highlights, such as the Doll and Toy Museum where the history of playthings is shown, as well as the Crime Museum, where the visitor gets an insight into the law and especially its execution during the last 700 years. In the evening take an English-speaking tour with the Night-Watchman (included in your Heidelberg & Bavaria Vacation Package.).
Day 8 Nuremberg
By Rail it takes less than 1,5 hours from Rothenburg ob der Tauber to Nuremberg. Your hotel is located in walking distance from Nuremberg Central Station (which is located just outside the Old City Wall surrounding Nuremberg Old Town and the Imperial Castle). Nuremberg’s history reaches back to the year 1050, its name “nourenberc” translates into “rocky hill”. Nuremberg’s famous landmark, the “Kaiserburg” (Imperial Castle), towers above the Old town, which is protected by the five kilometers long city wall, many towers and gates can still be visited. The medieval Castle is one of the most important imperial palaces dating from the middle ages from the 11th century (the Heidelberg & Bavaria Vacation Package includes the admission). In the Third Reich Adolf Hitlers´Nazi Party had chosen Nuremberg for their Nazi Rallies and if you are interested in that part of history you may want to visit the Documenation Center Nazi Rally Grounds which are located just south of the Old Town.
When exploring the beauty of Nuremberg’s medieval Old Town you may want to start right at the Koenigstor (“Kingsgate”) which is the gate right across from Nuremberg Central Station. From where the timber framed buildings, the Gothic Church of St.Lawrence and the Church of St.Sebaldus can be easily reached by foot. Right next to the Koenigstor is the Handwerkerhof (craft center), here you will feel like you are back in the medieval times, there are craft workshops like they used to have a long time ago as well as a gingerbread bakery. Make sure to enjoy a Nuremberg Bratwurst along with a beer or a glass of “Frankenwein” (franconian wine).
Day 9 – Munich
After breakfast take the train from Nuremberg to Munich Central Station. Your hotel is located in short walking distance from the station. The price of your tour already includes a ticket for unlimited free use of public transportation within Munich as well as admission to many sights in Munich (Munich Residence and Residence Museum, Treasury, Cuvilliés-Theatre, Hall of Fame and Statue of Bavaria, Nymphenburg Palace and Park, Marstallmuseum, Museum of Nymphenburg Porcelain) and with your tour package you will also receive walking suggestions for a self-guided walking tour through Munich City Center. Along this walking tour you will visit the Marienplatz with the New Town Hall (with the “Glockenspiel”), the Konigsplatz (King´s Square), cultural center in the 19th century and later, during the “Third Reich”, site of Nazi Party mass rallies and location of the Nazi Party headquarters in Germany, the English Garden as well as the the State Opera House. You will be able to visit famous churches like Munich Frauenkirche, “Dom zu Unserer Lieben Frau (Cathedral of Our Dear Lady), with a height of 325 ft. a Munich landmark, St. Peters Church, built in the 14th century and the Asam Church, which was built as a private chapel and integrated into an apartment building. The tour will pass by the most famous Munich shopping streets (Kaufinger street and Neuhauser street) as well as by the “Viktualienmarkt”, a traditional farmers market (open every day except on Sundays). The tour will take you by the famous “Alois Dallmayr” luxury delicatessen and coffee store as well as to the Hofbrauhaus of course, probably the world’s most popular beer hall. This may be a great place to enjoy a hearty dinner and a fresh Mass of beer (one mug holds 33.8 US fl oz)!
Day 10 – Escorted Coach Tour to the Royal Castles
Another highlight of your London, Paris, Belgium & Germany Rail Circle tour will be a visit of the world famous Neuschwanstein Castle. You will be on an all-day escorted coach tour which will first take you to Oberammergau for a photo stop (you may want take a look at the Festival Hall where the Passion Play takes place every ten years.) The coach will then take you to Linderhof Palace, the Royal Villa of King Ludwig II. The Palace and Park were inspired by Versailles and the rooms are beautifully decorated and furnished. After a short drive through Austria and back into Germany you will get to Neuschwanstein Castle. The picture of Neuschwanstein is probably present in everybody’s mind and Neuschwanstein really seems to be taken out of a fairy tale. You will join an English-speaking guided tour through the Castle. The tour of the interior, the Throne Hall, the Hall of the Singers, the Grotto and all of the private rooms which were built for King Ludwig II, will make the picture perfect! After the tour of the inside make sure to take some time to explore the castle grounds. The view of Neuschwanstein from the bridge behind the castle is like no other! Your luxury coach will take you back to Munich where you will arrive in time for dinner.
Day 11 – Heidelberg
You will continue your London, Paris, Belgium & Germany Rail Circle tour with a direct, about three hour train ride by speed rail, from Munich to Heidelberg Central Station. Since the station is a little bit outside of the Old Town, where your hotel is located, your tour already includes a taxi transfer from Heidelberg Central Station to your hotel. Heidelberg is a beautiful historic town located along the banks of the Neckar River and the most significant sight is certainly the ruin of Heidelberg Castle, which is towering above the city. Since your hotel is located right inside of the Old Town of Heidelberg it is easy to explore historic Heidelberg by foot. Your tour package will include walking tour suggestions for the Old Town. Along the walking tour you will see the Old Bridge from where you have a nice view of the Old Town and the Castle ruins above. You will also pass by the “Marktplatz” (market place) which is the main square of Heidelberg, the “Peterskirche” (St. Peter´s Church) and the historic University of Heidelberg. Heidelberg´s University was founded 1386 and it is the oldest University in Germany and with more than 30.000 students it is still one of the most important universities in Germany today. If you want to enjoy a view over Heidelberg and the Neckar River you may want to walk up to the grounds of the castle ruins or – for a small fee, take the historic funicular up and down Heidelberg Castle.
Day 12 – Paris
After breakfast you will have a taxi transfer from your hotel in Heidelberg Old Town to Heidelberg Central Station. From here you take a short train ride to close by Mannheim from where high-speed ICE or TGV will take you to Paris in less than 3.5 hours! After you dropped off your baggage at your hotel (located in walking distance from Paris Est. Station) you will still have time that day to do some sightseeing. You are holding a 2 Day Hop-on Hop-off Paris city tour pass for the double decker busses and – from the upper deck – you will enjoy great 360 degree panoramic views of Paris. The tour passes by Notre Dame Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture built in 12th century, the Musee d’Orsay and the Galaries Lafayette, one of Paris’ premier department stores; after shopping do not forget to enjoy the great Paris city views from the terrace. The Hop-on Hop-off Paris City tour will also take you to the Avenue des Champs-Elysees, one of the most famous streets in the world, to the Arc de Triomphe and to the Grand Palais, where varying exhibitions present work of arts by famous painters, from Monet to Picasso.
Day 13 – Paris
Your Europe tour continues with a full day of Sightseeing in Paris. With your 2 Day Hop-on Hop-off Paris city tour pass you can easily move around Paris. For a great view of the Eiffel Tower take the double decker bus across the river, you may want to hop off at Trocadero, site of the Palais de Chaillot. The hill across the Seine River from the Eiffel Tower is a great spot to take a photo of the world famous Paris landmark. You should hop off right at the Eiffel Tower. The iron lattice tower is the tallest building in Paris (1063 ft.). Many couples plan a visit of the tower during sunset – for a spectacular view of the “City of Lights”, as Paris is often referred to. If you do not want to tour Paris on board of the bus all day you may want to spend the afternoon joining a tour of trendy Marais, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Paris with many narrow historic streets and with an even larger number of shopping opportunities! The English-speaking walking tour is a free tour (you may want to tip the guide after the tour) and it focuses on authentic Paris lifestyle: private home architecture, sophisticated fashion shops and unique art galleries. As an alternative you may want to spend the afternoon by visiting one of the famous museums in Paris. You can hop off at the Musee du Louvre, originally a royal fortress, where you can spend several hours exploring the museum which houses 35,000 works of art, definitely a “must-see” when you are in Paris and have not visited the Louvre before. There is plenty to do all day and, when the day goes by, the Paris´ nightlife is legendary, of course!
Day 14 – London
Your last rail trip along your London, Paris, Belgium & Germany Rail Circle tour will take you on board of the high-speed Eurostar train from Paris to London. Maybe you use your last day in London for some shopping at Harrods, with more than 330 departments the biggest department store in Europe. Or you visit the original Madame Tussauds. In 1836 Marie Tussaud opened her first permanent exhibition. Or maybe you would like to take a ride on Europe’s tallest Ferris wheel, the London Eye. At 520 ft. you have a great view and this may be the perfect location to wave good bye to Europe!

CUSTOMIZED TOUR Dear Michaela, Just a short note to thank you for all the organizing you did for our trip through Eastern Europe. Here is a little feedback. All the trains we caught were comfortable, clean and a pleasant way to travel. We arrived in Dresden and the hotel Pullman Newa was comfortable and close to the station. Walking to the old town was easy and straightforward. The hotel room was comfortable and breakfast was good. The only strange thing was that there was no free wifi available for guests. We arrived in Prague and walked to the Liberty Hotel. So you can advise your clients that walking in itself wasn’t a problem but the cobbled streets made pulling suitcases rather difficult. We caught a taxi back to the station after our stay there. The hotel was a lovely choice and it was close to the old town and many of the attractions. The Royal Park Hotel in Budapest is close to the station. We enjoyed the attractions in Budapest and used the “Hop on Hop off” buses. We arrived in Vienna and found the hotel easily. This was a lovely hotel too. The fact that they “produce “all their own power is amazing. The staff was friendly and helpful. The underground railway system was easy to use and it made getting around very easy. Innsbruck was magnificent and the hotel was lovely and once we had a local map we found it easy to get our bearings. It snowed while we were leaving Innsbruck in the train. Exciting for us coastal dwellers! The trip was lovely. The organization was superb – everything we asked for. We will recommend you and your company to anyone here who needs information and assistance with organizing a holiday in Europe. Thank you once again and please thank Thomas too for all the help you both gave us. Kind regards, – Mario and Ilona B., South Africa
